Perspective

Writer: Omar S.E. AzanOmar S.E. Azan

I like idioms and "sayings".

They can carry so much personal weight and can even be the guiding forces of entire organisations.

Make hay while the sun shines.

The early bird catches the worm - that's pretty disgusting but we understand the point.

As I reflect on father's day 2022 I think about the lessons my Dad taught me, and the lessons I have tried to teach my children, and specifically my son, who is almost 7.

He is at the stage where he questions pretty much everything, and already feels like he knows what works and what does not. So rather than ask my opinion, my advice or my guidance, he tries to figure things out for himself... frequently to his own detriment.

"Aww, why didn't it work" or "Why can't I do this" or "That's not what I wanted" are frequent exclamations in my home.

As a father, my job is to try to help him see where it went wrong, why it went wrong, and how he can improve it. He is a quick child, in both physical and mental capacities, and the act of having to slow down and piece things out is incredibly infuriating to him.

More "sayings" inevitably spring from my lips as I try to give him pearls of wisdom to hold on to.

Haste makes waste

A journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step

Don't rock the chair! Stop scaring your sister! Don't throw that in the house... wait, sorry, I got distracted...

My son will get very frustrated, even if he has not tried an alternative solution. His way, SHOULD be working... But it's not...But it should!

And the moment he stops letting his frustration dictate his course of action, and allows himself to see the situation differently, he may find a solution.

As business people, many times we feel like our way should work. The way we have done it for years worked in the past, so it why doesn't it work now?

Your attitude determines your altitude - one of my father's favourites.

So what does that mean? Are our own attitudes holding us back?

In a word, Yes.

Many organisations are afraid to let go of what they see as "Their Way" - especially the entrepreneur who has trusted their way to get them so far.

But what if you could choose to look at the situation differently, or with a new perspective? And with just a little bit of help or guidance, Your Way could be even better than it ever was.

And just like my son does, you could feel an overwhelming sense of accomplishment with even the smallest changes.

What would that be like?

Well, maybe it could be Omazing.
